In Berlin I believe3/2/2010

Some cities fail to impress and live up to the hype, some cities are under-hyped, others are hyped and deliver beyond your expecations. I heard many great things about Berlin, but did not expect the city to live up to my lofty expectations.

It starts with the living quarters.

In my case the hostel, Wombats City Hostel. I am currently typing from the lobby of Wombats. This hostel is in my top two of best places I’ve stayed since I’ve been on my trip. (Haven’t decided if this one or Rossio in Lisbon is #1)

Onto the main attraction: Berlin.

Berlin looks like a mess. Over 90% of the city was bombed, there is grafitti everywhere, and the streets look like a dirty trash collector. However, for some strange reason I love the look and feel of the city.

The history is incredible. Germany, blamed for both World Wars, offers countless museums and attractions for history buffs. Everywhere you look there is a monument in dedication for something.

The nightlife is awesome as well. Great music scene, ok bars and clubs, but did I mention a great music scene?

The people here are very relaxed, all things considering since the Berlin Wall fell only about 20 years ago.

I love that everything is very well priced. Beers are very inexpensive and the city doesn’t appear to take advantage of the tourist. I’m sure there is some but not as much as the last few stops I have been on. Such a great relief!

Anywhoo, I’ posting this because I really like the city of Berlin. I’m still not sure why. I just know I like it, ALOT. Maybe I’ll figure it out, but again maybe not. All I know is I cannot wait to come back!

Liked your quick take on Berlin. Did you meet a lady in Berlin and that could be attributing to your attraction to the city? Have you seen The Lives of Others about life in Berlin right after WWII? My parents said it was a very modern, artsy city with a lot of pain and promise.

Ha. Good observation Lauren. Hostels are very good for meeting people and this one especially with a bar and lounge area. But no I did not find my soulmate in Berlin. met alot of people though.

Berlin is the most amazing and historic city I went to on my journey. You get off the train and you just feel all the history in the air and the people you meet. From Nazi Germany to the Cold War just an amazing place to experience .
